Easier to play
This step adds no new rules. It makes the game easier to start, easier to read and playable without a mouse.
What is new
- A short tutorial guides you through your first sector: scout, attack, fight, then your first order. It reads the game state, so if you are faster than the text, it simply moves on. You can skip it.
- Rules at a glance: press
?or the button next to the tabs. Every number in it comes straight from the rule data, so it can never fall out of date. - Settings: language (switches instantly, without reloading – even in the middle of a battle), a colorblind mode, fewer effects, volume and mute.
- Keyboard play: number keys switch tabs, arrow keys move across the map, and dialogs keep the focus where it belongs. In battle you can pick the target of a focus order with
Tab. - Sounds: short tones for hits, abilities and the end of a battle. They are generated in the browser, so there is nothing to download.
Colorblind mode
Until now your sectors were marked by a blue border and cut-off ones by an orange one. In colorblind mode the difference is in the shape: owned sectors get a second inner ring, cut-off sectors a dashed ring, and attack targets a dotted outline. In battle, your ships carry a dot and enemy ships a triangle.
How we test it
Every view is checked at phone widths of 375 and 432 pixels for sideways scrolling, and every button, link and field must have a name a screen reader can announce. One test plays a whole round – conquering a sector, switching tabs, starting an order, opening the rules – using only the keyboard.
